It's nice to get picked.
It feels good for the self-esteem.
It's validating.
And it feels like your work matters.
Nothing wrong with it. But the praise is seductive. And it can get you overly-focused on chasing the approval of others.
It's an endless trap. The target keeps moving.
And 99.99% of the time...you don't get picked.
It’s unsustainable, a horrible way to live your life, and you can lose your identity in the process.
The better option?
Pick yourself.
Do it for you. Respond to the calling inside, instead of what’s outside (which is unreliable, distracting, and most of the time - not for you).
If you don’t get the dream job at the dream company with the dream pay…start your own company. Create your side hustle.
If you don’t get into the club you want (and make sure it’s truly what you want)…start your own club.
If you don’t get the right publisher to look your way…self-publish. There are so many tools to level the playing field, and there are now many reasons why it’s better economically.
It may not give you the dopamine shot.
It may not pay off for the longest time, or at all.
But the odds are better. It’s the right decision. And it’s likely you’re doing what you’re supposed to do.
